An adorable hippo changed her mind after breaking out of the zoo

It’s not every day that an animal will walk itself into a zoo, especially not one it has just escaped from.

Footage has emerged of a hippopotamus escaping her enclosure at Ramat Gan Safari in Israel. The hippo marched straight out the front gate, spent about two minutes in the outside world, and realised that the city life just isn’t for her, so she walked right back through the front gate.

Her keepers followed her, but they certainly kept their distance, as hippos can weigh up to 2750 kilograms and are the deadliest large land animal, killing an estimated 500 people per year.

The zoo’s management is treating the situation very seriously, taking steps to ensure similar escapes can’t happen again. They released a statement claiming that the hippo “tasted the grass outside” before returning.
